" Body not stiff. Mind stiff "
- Sri K. Pattabhi Jois -

Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga was created by K. Pattabhi Jois.

The style is powerful and energetic, synchronizing breath with movement.

The individual yoga poses (asanas) are linked by flowing movements (Vinyasa).

Jois established his Ashtanga Yoga Research Institute in 1948. The current style of teaching is called Mysore style after Mysore, India where the practice was originally taught

(Wikipedia).

Ashtanga Yoga full primary Series takes about 90 minutes.

The foundation of Ashtanga Yoga is based upon the dynamic flow of Suryanamaskara 'A' and ‘B'. This practice starts with a traditional opening Chant and ends with a closing Chant.

Ashtanga Yoga can be practiced by everyone! The use of props  and modifications will be given as well as hands on adjustment to support

(on request and agreed with the yoga student).

In addition to breathing we will learn about the bandhas (locks), heat, Vinyasa (Flow) and prana (life force). These elements form the internal universe of Ashtanga Yoga. Breath and Movement will become one and you will experience over time the grace and fluidity grow from the inside/out.

After heating our body with the sun salutations we will go through a sequence of standing asasanas (Poses), entering the seated sequence where we will remain still but including the dynamics of vinyasa after every asana. In the finishing sequence we will turn Upside/Down for inversions and opening the front to bend the back of our body with backward bendings. After Backbends. We will end the practice with the Final three seated postures that will bring us towards the closing of our practice.

I have practiced and been trained by David Swenson, who was one of Pattabhi Jois first students in 1975, when Jois came to the U.S for the first time.

He is one of a very small number of people that have learned the full Ashtanga system as it was originally taught by K. Pattabhi Jois.
